Police arrest suspect in Rs. 9 million gem theft

Beruwala Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the theft of a parcel of 52 gems worth over Rs 9 million. The parcel had been stolen from a stall at a location in Beruwala known as 'Pattakade' where local gem sellers gather to sell their gem collections.

A gem dealer had reported to police that a parcel of gems belonging to him had been stolen from him while at Pattakade on October 21 (Saturday) and Beruwala Police who conducted investigations have arrested a suspect this morning and recovered 46 of the stolen gems, with an estimated worth of Rs 7.6 million.

However, a further six of the stolen gems are yet to be recovered and investigations are ongoing to find them.

The suspect is due to be produced before the Beruwala Magistrate's Court later today.
