A suspect allegedly connected to a drug racket being operated from the Negombo Prison was taken into custody with 46 grams of heroin worth Rs 1 million in Puttalam early this morning (29).
The arrest was made by officers from the Puttalam Division Anti-Narcotics Unit.
Police say the alleged mastermind behind the racket is serving time at the Negombo Prison for murder. He had conducted the racket via mobile phone and had been in constant contact with the arrested suspect.
Following the arrest of the suspect, police also searched two locations where a second suspect allegedly connected to the drug racket often frequented. They were assisted in the search by police dog 'Sandra' attached to the Police Kennel Unit at Puttalam Headquarters.
The arrested suspect was due to be produced before the Puttalam Magistrate's Court.
