Five suspects were arrested after Nikaweratiya police busted a large scale racket involving the selling of parts of stolen trishaws and motorbikes today (17).
The suspects were taken into custody along with four stolen motorbikes and two trishaws, along with 21 motorbike engines and 27 licence plates, Nikaweratiya police stated.
Police said the racket was busted after police launched a probe into the theft of a motorbike belonging to a student who was sitting for the ongoing GCE Advanced Level Examination. The student had come to sit for a paper at his exam at a school in Rasnayakapura. He had lodged a complaint with police that he had parked his motorbike near the school but had found it missing after returning to the spot after the exam.
Police said investigations are ongoing to arrest two other suspects linked to the racket while the five suspects in custody along with the court products are due to be produced before the Nikaweratiya Magistrate's Court.
