Police fire tear gas at uni student protest

Police have fired tear gas to disperse a group of university students who were moving in a procession towards the Presidential Secretariat in Fort. 

The procession, organized by the Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) had begun from Technical Junction in Maradana this afternoon. The protesting students were demanding the immediate release of fellow undergraduates from the University of Kelaniya, who are in remand custody over an alleged ragging incident. 

Police today obtained an order from the Fort Magistrate preventing the students from proceeding towards Fort. Police later fired tear gas after the students attempted to proceed to the Presidential Secretariat despite the court order.
