The body of a suspect who escaped arrest during an illegal sand mining raid by jumping into the Mahaweli river was discovered a short while ago.
The deceased has been identified as a 22-year old.
Navy personnel had apprehended three suspects in Kinniya earlier today for engaging in illegal sand mining in the area.
A tense situation arose when the suspects were arrested as area residents along with other illegal sand miners had protested against the arrest while also attacking the Navy personnel involved in the incident.
The attack left 12 Navy personnel injured.
The three suspects had escaped custody in the midst of the incident. However, one suspect was arrested again while two others had fled the area by jumping into the Mahaweli river.
Security personnel are on the hunt to arrest the other suspect.
