A police sergeant attached to the Weliweriya Police Division was arrested by Bribery Commission officials for soliciting a bribe of Rs 2000 from a suspect who was in police custody.
The bribe was obtained from the father of a youth who was arrested over the possession of narcotics.
Accordingly, a complaint was filed in this regard following which Western Province DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon had referred the matter to Gampaha OIC Muditha Pussawella for a probe.
Gampaha Police who had then conducted an investigation had submitted its findings to the Bribery Commission.
The Bribery Commission had then taken measures to arrest the Police Sergeant.
