News

Police and the Special Task Force have been deployed for security in Batticaloa after a protest took place against the burial of the remains of an Easter Sunday suicide bomber at the Kalliyakandy cemetery today (Aug 27).

Area residents had launched a protest along the Colombo - Batticaloa road this evening against the burial which was expected to be carried out upon an order issued by court.

It is reported that police had fired tear gas to disperse the protesters following which the protest had been called off.

The remains have been identified as those belonging to the bomber who committed suicide at the Zeon Church in Batticaloa in which 28 devotees had died while 70 were left injured on Easter Sunday.
