Polling concludes: High turnout in most districts

Polling for the 2018 Local Government (LG) Election has now concluded. A generally high voter turnout was recorded from many areas, with overall turnout in most districts reported to be about 60 per cent or over. 

Voters are set to elect representatives to 340 Local Government bodies. Although the election was earlier due to be held for 341 local bodies, polls for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha has been temporarily halted following a court order. 

A largely peaceful atmosphere prevailed throughout the period as polling continued. However, sparodic incidents of election law violations were reported from several parts of the island. Police have made several arrests regarding these incidents and investigations are continuing.
