Ports and Shipping Minister Johnston Fernando has called for a report on steps which should be taken to expedite the Eastern Container Terminal (ECT) development project.
These instructions had been issued during a special meeting convened at the ministry yesterday (Dec 6) to discuss matters which have affected the progress of the project.
Ministry officials had claimed that the project which was initiated before 2015, had been delayed after the United National Front government had come into power, the Ports Ministry said in a statement.
During the meeting, Minister Fernando had stated that the Colombo Port has been failing to enhance its productivity due to the delay in developing the ECT.
He had explained that the ECT could facilitate the movement of more shipping containers once developed.
