The Ministry of Power and Energy has introduced a new set of regulations in a bid to overcome the power crisis faced at present.
Accordingly, the number of functioning street lights would be reduced by 10 percent and would also be switched off an hour before the scheduled time.
"This situation is expected to prevail during the Avurudu season as well," Power and Energy Minister Ravi Karunanayake said adding that there is a shortage of 300MW in the power system at present.
Further, government institutions and religious places of worship which receive free electricity supply are also requested to switch off two or more light bulbs during the next three months in order to ensure the balance of the power system.
Minister Karunanyake also requested the general public to follow suit.
