The Power and Energy Ministry has reiterated its request to the general public to use electricity sparingly.
While the second generator of the Norochcholai Coal Power Station has now been added to the system, it cannot be over worked in order to generate a high demand of power, Spokesman and Development Director, Ministry of Power, Sulakshana Jayawardena said.
Mr Jayawarena requested the public to cut down on the excessive usage of electricity as well as urged the use of optimally functioning electrical appliances that don't drain power.
A drop in water levels has been recorded in the areas located close to power plants due to the lack of rainfall these days.
Only 16.2 percent of the country's total electricity consumption is obtained through hydro power generation while 52 percent is obtained from fuel. Of the total national requirement for power, coal power plants are capable of generating only 31 percent.
