President extends declaration of Railways as essential service

President Maithripala Sirisena has issued a gazette today (Aug 27) extending the regulation to declare Railways as an essential service.

According to the gazette, all required services for the functioning of the railway system must take place without any interruption.

A previous gazette had been issued to this effect on June 27 after rail unions launched a strike action that month.
