President Maithripala Sirisena risks being impeached and losing his civic rights due to his repeated violations of the Constitution, JVP MP Vijitha Herath told Parliament today (5).

Speaking during the debate on the adjournment motion in Parliament, MP Herath charged that four of the five gazette notifications issued by the President since October 26 violated the Constitution.

He claimed that the President had repeatedly violated the Constitution since October 26. MP Herath questioned by what authority the President was stating that he would not appoint Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister even if all 225 MPs in Parliament supported him. The MP pointed out that the Constitution clearly notes that the President must appoint as PM the MP who in his opinion is most likely to command the confidence of Parliament. By pledging not to appoint Ranil Wickremesinghe as PM even if he enjoyed the confidence of the entire 225 MPs in Parliament, the President is again violating the Constitution, the JVP MP said.
