President Maithripala Sirisena issuing a gazette notification has announced his decision to dissolve Parliament with effect from midnight tonight.
The gazette notification stated that the President had the power to do so based on Article 70(5) of the contitution.
Accordingly, the new Parliament will be summoned on January 17, 2019 with the General Elections scheduled to be held on January 5, 2019.
