President leaves for Russia

President Maithripala Sirisena left for Russia this morning on an official visit. The visit is being undertaken on the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. 

President Sirisena's visit to Russia will be the first official visit to the country by a Sri Lankan Head of State in more than four decades. The last Sri Lankan leader to undertake an official visit to Russia was Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike, who visited Moscow in 1974.

During the visit, President Sirisena is scheduled to sign several bilateral agreements in the areas of economics, trade, tourism, science and technology sector, cultural and education cooperation, the President's office said. 

He is also due to hold bilateral discussions with the Russian President where ways of further strengthening ties between the two countries is expected to be discussed. 

The President is also scheduled to attend a ceremony organized to mark the  60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and he will also attend a Sri Lanka-Russia Business Forum, which is organized to further promote trade and investment between two countries.
