President Maithripala Sirisena has sought INTERPOL assistance to identify and extradite drug smugglers and financial criminals evading arrest in foreign countries.
The President had made this remark after accepting a medal presented by the INTERPOL today (Aug 27), the President’s Office said in a statement.
During the occasion, INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock had said that an agreement could be signed to provide new drug-tracking tools and to share expertise in identifying drug smuggling routes.
President Sirisena had thanked the INTERPOL Secretary-General for immediately responding to the request made for assistance to investigate the April 21 attacks by terrorists.
The statement said that the INTERPOL General Secretary had praised the steps taken by the President, the Defence Ministry, the security and intelligence units for swiftly apprehending the perpetrators of the Easter Sunday attacks.
A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
Update: Five of the twelve passengers on board the bell 212 aircraft that crashed into the Maduru Oya today, have succumbed to their injuries, the SLAF said.
