President submits report on expenditures of ministries for development projects

The Ministry of Highways & Road Development and Petroleum Resources Development has used up its entire allocation towards development projects for this year, a report submitted to the Cabinet by the President said.

The report outlined the annual allocations for 33 ministries and their expenditure on development activities as in the second quarter of this year. The expenditures of the Finance Ministry and the Foreign Affairs Ministry were not included in the report.

President Maithripala Sirisena in his report had pointed out that Rs 723 billion had been allocated for development projects this year.

The Ministry of Highways & Road Development and Petroleum Resources Development had spent Rs 134,991 million for development projects, using up its quota of Rs 134,205 million.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Public Enterprise, Kandyan Heritage and Kandy Development, and the Non-Cabinet Ministry of Special Area Development had not spent its allocations towards development projects.

Among the Ministries which had used up more than half of its quota was the non-cabinet Ministry of Labour and Trade Union Relations - 89 percent, Lands and Parliamentary Reforms Ministry - 82 percent, Justice and Prisons Reforms Ministry - 62 percent, and the Housing and Construction Ministry - 56 percent.

The Ministry which had spent the lowest was the Ministry of Buddhasasana & Wayamba Development which had used up only seven percent of its total allocation of 861.4 million.

Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry headed by the President too had used only 23 percent of its allocation of Rs 12,824 million.
