President Maithripala Sirisena, speaking at the 73rd UN General Assembly called for the international community to look at Sri Lanka through a different perspective while also allowing the country to solve its problems on its own.
During his address, the President lauded the effort taken by the Armed Forces to defeat one of the most dangerous terrorist groups in the world. He also added saying that it was due to this reason that Sri Lanka managed to maintain peace as a country.
The President also remarked that the last three years have seen various democratic reforms such as human rights, media freedom and independence of the judiciary being strengthened. He also encouraged the internationl community to support the country in strengthening human rights and democratic activities in the country.
Furthermore, the President went on to say that climate change has been the prime cause for poverty.
President Sirisena also expressed his approval for the agreements reached during the session headed by US President Donald Trump on halting the spread of narcotics.
