The President's Office has hailed the successful evacuation of 33 Sri Lankan citizens from Wuhan as the culimation of a joint effort by different Sri Lankan and Chinese agencies.
Issuing a statement, the Presdent's Office noted that Sri Lanka is just the third nation to have successfully evacuated its citizens from Wuhan, which has been in total lockdown since January 23 following the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus in the city.
It stressed that the evacuation was a reflection of the close diplomatic ties between the two countries. "Under the direction of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the combined efforts of the Presidential Secretariat, the Ministry of Foreign Relations, Sri Lankan Embassy in Beijing, Chinese Embassy in Colombo, Civil Aviation Authority, Sri Lanka Army and Sri Lanka Air Force combined to ensure the success of the operation," the statement stressed.
