President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has permitted burial for Muslims who die of Covid-19, subjected to certain conditions.
Muslim religious authorities confirmed that the President has told the health officials that burial could be permitted provided the burial site is on a dry land and the necessary guidelines issued by the World Health Organisation are followed.
The permission was granted following Justice Minister Ali Sabri's request. Ahead of today's ministerial meeting, Minister Sabri told a gathering of Muslims yesterday that the matter was being considered by an experts committee.
Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the remains of Muslims who died of the disease have been cremated, despite protests from Muslims and international human rights group.
Muslims took to the social media yesterday to thank the President, the minister and all those who worked tirelessly to make it happen.
