Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe called on António Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations on 5 June 2017 at the United Nations Head Quarters in New York.
The Secretary General warmly welcomed the Prime Minister and expressed his deep appreciation for his presence at the historic Oceans Conference now being held at the United Nations. He recalled that both Portugal and Sri Lanka have close connections with the oceans and said that he is familiar with Sri Lanka having visited the country many times in his previous capacity as High Commissioner for Refugees.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe outlined the national reconciliation process taking place in Sri Lanka under the four broad pillars of Truth, Justice Reparations and Non Recurrence. He further explained the Constitutional Reform process and legal and other measures being taken relating to reconciliation. The Secretary General assured the Prime Minister that his office is at Sri Lanka’s disposal in this regard, and that, “the UN agenda is the success of Sri Lanka.”

Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala told Parliament today that the suspect in the rape of a lady doctor at the Anuradhapura teaching hospital has been identified as an army deserter and he will be apprehended shortly.
