A special meeting will be convened with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Plantations Owners Association today (Oct 26) with regard to the wages issue of estate workers
Plantation Owners Association speaking to media said the demand for Rs. 1000 per day by the unions was unrealistic as Regional Plantation Companies were running at a loss.
The issue has proved to be an impasse with estate workers demanding an increase in their basic daily wage to Rs. 1000 while plantation owners claim they can increase only up to Rs. 600.
Meanwhile, trade unions have said they are unprepared to agree to a wage below Rs. Rs 1,000.
