Vavuniya residents staged a protest along the Jaffna - Kandy road and the Jaffna - Colombo rail track last night, against power failures experienced in more than 50 areas in the district.
Residents claimed that Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) employees in Vavuniya had suspended power supply as a gesture of protest against an attack on them in the Achipuram area.
It is believed that CEB employees had been assaulted when they had attempted to disconnect power supply to a residence in Achipuram, over the failure to pay the electricity bill.
Five employees had been admitted to the Vavuniya Hospital as a result of injuries sustained due to the incident.
CEB employees in the district have demanded legal action to be taken against those involved in the assault. Accordingly, police said that three individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident so far.
