A protest was held in Naula town today (25) demanding that authorities take steps to end the environmental destruction inside the Opalgala Forest Reserve. A group of Opalgala villagers and environmental activists held the protest alleging that a businessman had forcibly acquired land inside the reserve.
The protest was held opposite the Department of Forest Conservation's Naula office. The protesters alleged that a businessman had forcibly acquired about 300 acres inside the forest reserve and was engaged in an environmental destruction of a massive scale. They claimed he was using the names of prominent Government politicians and was constructing building inside the reserve and roads leading up to them.
