Purchase of vehicles for MPs put on hold

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has directed the Treasury not to release funds to purchase new vehicles for MPs until funds had been allocated to rebuild the houses that were destroyed or damaged during the natural disasters experienced last month and the explosion at the Kosgama army camp in Salawa. 

Accordingly, the supplementary estimate to purchase vehicles will be suspended until these allocations are completed. 

The decision comes amid strong criticism of the Government's move to try and allocate Rs.1.18 billion to purchase brand new vehicles for a group of Government MPs.
