Railway trade unions call off planned strike

Railway trade unions have called off their island-wide strike scheduled from midnight today. The decision to call off the strike was taken after representatives of the trade unions held discussions with President Maithripala Sirisena this afternoon.

Speaking in Parliament today, President Sirisena invited all those who are engaged in protests and strikes to hold discussions with him, rather than going for strike and inconveniencing the public.

However, the planned island-wide strike by transport sector unions including private bus operators, school van drivers and three-wheeler drivers is expected to go ahead from midnight today.
