Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has expressed regret over the remarks made by former Northern Province Chief Minister, C. Vigneshwaran, claiming that the relief operations in the North were carried out with an ulterior motive.
Mr. Vigneshwaran, made certain controversial remarks recently against the Army's relief operations in the North by claiming that it was done in a bid to change perceptions on war crimes.
"We have always fought for the rights of Tamils," the former President was quoted saying at a religious ceremony in Tangalle. "Therefore, neither myself nor the security forces have any intention of covering up anything".
Mr. Rajapaksa added that he had been fighting for the rights of the Tamils along with the Army at all times.
He emphasised that the war was against terrorism and not the Tamils.
"Those who were in favour of terrorism are now assuming that all soldiers have committed wrong doings" the former President claimed.
Further, Mr. Rajapaksa stated that the people of this country will decide on the situation of the country. He said the people know that the incumbent government is not capable of governing the country in a proper manner.
"Therefore, we will register ourselves a victory at the upcoming general elections" he signed off by saying.
