United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to step down as Party Leader, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam stated today.
The names of Ravi Karunanayake, Daya Gamage, Vajira Abeywardena and Akila Viraj Kariyawasam have been nominated to fill the post of party leader left vacant by Mr Wickremesinghe's resignation.
Mr Wickremesinghe's decision to step down comes after the UNP suffered a humiliating defeat at last Wednesday's Parliamentary election, where it only managed to secure a single seat via the National List.
