Rear Admiral S.S. Ranasinghe has been appointed as the new Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, the Presidential Media Unit (PMU) has announced.
The appointment came after President Maithripala Sirisena chose not to extend the term of Vice Admiral Travis Sinniah as Navy Commander.
Vice Admiral Sinniah assumed duties as the Navy Commander just two months ago on August 22. The decision by the President not to extend his term means that he will retire as the Navy Commander who served the shortest period of time in the post.
The man who will succeed him, Rear Admiral Ranasinghe is currently serving as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy. A product of Anuradhapura Central College, he joined the Navy as an Officer Cadet on November 15, 1982.
He is a highly decorated officer, being a recipient of Weera Wickrama Vibushanaya and Rana Wikrama Padakkama for gallantry in the face of the enemy. He has also been decorated for distinguished service and he has been commended by the Commander of the Navy for outstanding performance of duty and exceptional contributions to Naval service.
