The Elections Secretariat said that 41 candidates made their cash deposits as the deadline ended this afternoon, making it the highest number of candidates to contest a presidential election in Sri Lanka.
Eight candidates placed their cash deposits today (Oct 6). This included, parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, former governor M.L.A.M Hizbullah, former parliamentarian M.K. Sivajalingam, and former provincial councillor Tissa Kuttiarachchi.
According to the polls body, a political candidate is required to make a deposit of Rs 50,000 while an independent candidate should make a deposit of Rs 75,000.
Nominations to contest at the poll could be handed over between 9 am to 11 am at the Elections Secretariat tomorrow. Objections to these nominations could be made between 9 am and 11:30 am.
The Presidential election is to be held on November 16.
