The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) has requested former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to reconsider his decision to slash the tax on sugar used in carbonated and fruit drinks.
Addressing a letter to Mr. Rajapaksa, the GMOA noted that a price ceiling was imposed on sugar in 2016 with the motive of imposing a limitation on the amount sugar used in foods.
The GMOA noted that diabetes has been spreading rapidly in the country and thereby stressed the need to restrict the amount of sugar used in consumer products.
Accordingly, the GMOA requested the former President to appoint a special committee to reconsider the incentives and ensure that the health of the citizens of this country is not exposed to danger.
The GMOA signed off by requesting the President to refrain from taking a final decision with regard to the slashing of tax on the soft drinks industry.
