Hundreds of relatives of missing persons took to the streets in Jaffna today demanding that the UN should intervene with an international mechanism in order to provide them answers on the fate of their loved ones who were made to disappear in past since the government failed to take adequate steps to find their whereabouts.
Families of missing persons, joined with local politicians and civil society organized a protest in Sankiliyan park, Jaffna after marching from town held photographs of their missing loved ones and placards demanding justice. Families of prisoners, detained under Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) without prosecution for years also joined with them demanding the release of their loves since war came to an end ten years ago.
In a petition sent to Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, families of disappeared alleged that the government deliberately refused to provide them answers on their loved ones and with recent government decision of withdrawing from co-sporning UN 30/1 Resolution of 2015, it closed all avenues for justice. “UN should intervene to provide us justice,”
