Parliamentarian Rishad Bathiudeen has called for Presidential commissions to investigate the Easter Sunday attacks and the alleged destruction of the Wilpattu National park.
In a letter to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the former minister lamented that “false and baseless” allegations have been levelled against him to gain political mileage and to stir up racism in the country.
Among the accusations included alleged involvement with the matermind behind the Easter Sunday attacks, Mohamed Zahran, and the clearing of forest lands in the Wilpattu National Park to relocate Muslim families displaced during the war.
"The Acting IGP, following an investigation, had informed the Speaker that I was not guilty of involvement in the Easter Sunday attacks," Bathiudeen said in the letter.
He pointed out that former president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government had systematically assisted the resettlement of displaced families after the Forest Department declared the lands surrounding the Wilpattu National Park as forest reserves.
He insisted that some groups are attempting to resuscitate these matters, causing problems to the Muslim society.
“These groups are attempting to create instability in the country by creating divisions in terms of religion, race, caste, and creed,” the former minister emphasised.
Accordingly, Bathiudeen called on the President to appoint a Presidential commission to investigate each of these allegations, should he feel a requirement to do so.
