An S-14 train power-set has been imported from China at a cost of Rs 1.8 billion today (Aug 13), the Transport Ministry said in a press release.
The power-set comprises two engines along with two air-conditioned compartments, two second class compartments and three third class compartments.
According to the ministry, eight similar power-sets are to be imported at a total cost of Rs 16.5 billion in near future. These power–sets would undergo a test run before being put into operation along the main railway line between Colombo Fort to Badulla.
These power-sets are expected to reduce problems faced by commuters due to the lack of trains operating along the Kandy rail line, the Transport Ministry further said.
The Department of Railways is expected to launch an intercity rail service using these power-sets to that effect.
