The government will abolish the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine and immediately stop new enrolments of students to the institute, National Policies and Economic Affairs Deputy Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva who also heads the committee appointed by the President to look into SAITM told parliament today.
In a special statement to the House, the Deputy Minister said that a solution would be formulated for the students who are already registered and studying at the SAITM.
He said that the committee would devise a solution in accordance with the University Grants Commission Act.
He urged the parents who were on a death fast near the National Hospital to suspend their action and the medical undergraduates who were boycotting their lecturers to resume their education.
The government would continue to hold talks with all stakeholders of the SAITM issue and would sort out the problem completely by Dec 31, the Deputy Minister said.
