Sajith promises to empower military to combat threat of global terrorism

News

Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa today (Oct 3) pledged to empower military personnel in order to combat global terrorism by granting them opportunities to engage in advanced training programmes.

“I promise that we won’t mistreat you and provide blue-collar jobs like the previous government,” Premadasa said during the United National Party (UNP) convention at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo.

He pointed out that democracy was established in the country owing to the soldiers who sacrificed their personal interests and their lives on behalf of the country.

UNP Deputy Leader Premadasa who will contest under the UNP-led Democratic National Front (DNF) said he would not encourage nepotism under his government.

“We only need talented individuals, professionals, and specialists if we are to work towards the welfare of the people," he said.

Speaking on diplomatic ties, Premadasa said he would maintain relations which are only favourable to the country. "Our government will not sign any agreements which could result in negative impacts to the country," he said.

Among other promises were to strengthen the health, agriculture, fisheries, tea, and rubber sectors and also small enterprises by increasing budgetary allocations.

Premadasa also pledged to set-up training institutes in English and IT at divisional secretariat levels for the youth in the country. He promised to protect and empower the children, youth and women during his rule.
