Employees of Samurdhi Banks are engaging in an islandwide token strike today (Apr 16) over the government's failure to address salary issues.
"We will organise protest demonstrations along with islandwide strikes if the government fails to address this issue following the token strike action," General Secretary of the All Island Samurdhi Development and Agricultural Research Union A.D. Jagath Kumara said.
However, Minister of Social Empowerment Daya Gamage condemned the engagement of employees in illegal acts in order to win their rights.
"We will have to annex the Samurdhi Banks to the Bank of Ceylon or the People's Bank if the services of Samrudhi Banks are disrupted," Minister Gamage said adding that engaging in unlawful practices in the guise of raising issues concerning one's rights was unacceptable.
