Former United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) parliamentarian Sarana Gunewardene was further remanded till September 9 by the Gampaha Magistrate today. Mr Gunewardene was arrested earlier over an incident of assaulting a youth during the recently concluded parliamentary elections period. Currently he is receiving treatment from Ragama Teaching Hospital. When the case was taken up today for hearing ,Gampaha Chief Magistrate Tikiri K Jayathilake ordered the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) of the Ragama teaching Hospital to submit a report to the courts on the nature of the illness.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
