Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka has taken oaths as the Cabinet Minister for Regional Development before President Maithripala Sirisena a short while ago.
Field Marshal Fonseka took oaths as an MP on February 9, filling the vacancy left by the death of United National Party (UNP) National List MP M.K.A.D.S. Gunawardena.
The move followed Fonseka's Democratic Party (DP) entering into an agreement with the UNP. Thereafter, the UNP' s Working Committee unanimously approved Fonseka's name to fill the seat left vacant by Gunawardena's death.
