The Supreme Court today (Apr 02) lifted the interim injunction which suspended the issuing of internships for medical grauates.
A group of students from SAITM had moved court claiming that they were being deprived of medical internships since those opportunities were granted to students of the John Kotalawala Defence University and the Sri Lanka Medical College.
Accordingly, the Supreme Court had issued an interim order suspending the issuing of internships.
However, the Supreme Court judge bench of Justices Buwaneka Aluvihare, L.T.B. Dehideniya and Preethi Padman Surasena today lifted the interim injunction and announced that the case would be taken up for further hearing on May 09.
Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jayasinghe, Health Secretary Wasantha Perera, Sri Lanka Medical Council and Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne have been named as respondents in the petition.
The petitioners claimed that their fundamental rights were being violated as they were deprived of being granted internships despite the Supreme Court and Appeal Court ruling that SAITM was a reggistered medical institute.
They also claimed that the Sri Lanka Medical Council had acted in contempt of court in this regard.
