UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday (Dec 9) the second tier leadership should be brought to the forefront to face the upcoming general election.
The former Prime Minister said this during a discussion with the UNP youth front at party headquarters ‘Sirikotha’.
He added that the second tier leadership of the party should move forward while understanding the existing shortcomings within the party. Adding that at this moment, arguing with others would serve no purpose.
"At the next parliamentary elections the United National Front (UNF) and all other political parties that value democracy should go in for a programme with the target of obtaining 113 seats in parliament, " he added.
While stating that under the current situation it is evident that all could get together and win 105 or 106 seats in Parliament at the next general elections, he added that the results of the presidential election too should be examined closely.
While expressing his opinion further, Mr Wickremesinghe said the main failure at the presidential election was the United National Front losing the votes of the Buddhists, the youth and the middle class.
Hence, discussions should be first held with the Buddhist monks and a programme drawn out, said the former premier.
He added that by now Parliamentary functions have been handed over to Deputy leader Sajith Premadasa and that it is his and the young MPs’ duty and responsibility to create an environment to attract the majority of the youth votes to the party.
