Senior members of the United National Party (UNP) have agreed to work unitedly, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said yesterday (Aug 30).
"We decided to protect the unity of the party by not making contrasting statements and organising unnecessary rallies," he said following a meeting with UNP leader Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The meeting had been attended by senior members of the party.
Kariyawasam added that Minister Sajith Premadasa had individually called on the Prime Minister and had informed him that he would not be able to attend the meeting.
Meanwhile, Minister Harin Fernando has said that the tussle for the presidential candidacy between the UNP is expected to end within a week.
He noted that UNP leader Wickremesinghe has not stated that he would not nominate Minister Premadasa as the party's presidential candidate.
