The water in the Seerakkuliya lagoon has turned red since yesterday following the pumping of water from the Aruwakkalu sanitary landfill, area residents say.
According to the area residents, the water which was pumped from the landfill had accumulated owing to the heavy rainfall experienced on Monday.
Last month, area residents staged a protest opposing the construction of the landfill citing that plans were afoot to construct a canal which would dump waste water of the landfill into the lagoon.
Meanwhile, the Director of the Aruwakkalu landfill project, Jayalal Fernando said that it was a group of Chinese workers at the site who had dumped the water into the lagoon. He has also said that he has instructed relevant officials to carry out an investigation into the incident.
