A ship named Sri Lanka Glory that washed ashore in Rummassala, Galle yesterday (Jul 18) with a large quantity of fuel could now pose a threat to the Buona-vista Coral reef, a Marine Protection Authority official said.
The Marine Environment Protection Authority’s General Manager Dr. P.B. Turney Pradeep speaking to media said the 10 to 15 tonnes of fuel onboard the vessel was similar to diesel.
“Severe environmental damage will be caused if the fuel in the vessel leaks out as a result of any damage to the ship’s hulls,” Dr Pradeep said after carrying out an observation on the ship today.
Accordingly, he insisted that the fuel in the vessel must be removed in order to prevent the Bonavista Coral Reef from being damaged.
Nine crew members who were aboard the ship which capsized owing to rough seas had been rescued by Navy officers last night.
