Six suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the sword attack on an individual outside the Jaffna District Secretariat last morning (8).
The victim, who was riding a motorbike when he was attacked with swords by several individuals who also came on motorbikes.
Jaffna police, who commenced an investigation into the incident, were able to identify the number plates of the motorbikes the assailants arrived in after analysing CCTV footage from the area and based on a statement made by the injured victim, were able to arrest four suspects allegedly involved in the attack from Mallakam.
Upon interrogation of the suspects, police were able to recover three motorbikes, two swords, an axe and a live hand grenade hidden at a house along Kovil Road, Nirveli. A further two suspects allegedly involved in the incident were arrested from Kopai along with a three-wheeler.
The arrested suspects are aged 20, 23, 24, 26, 28 and 37 and a residents of Chunnakam, Ilawalai, Mallakam and Kopai. All six are due to be produced before the Jaffna Magistrate today (9).
