A five-year agreement was signed between Sri Lanka and the International Rice Research Institute in Los Baños, Philippines yesterday (Jan 18).
The agreement was signed to implement a national plan which would gradually enable Sri Lanka to become self-sufficient in terms of rice production while also reducing the impacts on climate change.
Drector General of the International Rice Research Institute, Dr. Matthew Morell, Deputy Director General and the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs of Sri Lanka signed this agreement.
Meanwhile, the ground floor of the IRRI has been named after President Maithripala Sirisena in order to honour his services towards the field of agriculture.
The President also paid an inspection tour around the premises of the IRRI which consists of the largest rice bank with a large variety of seeds.
