SLC elections to get underway today

Voting to elect office bearers of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) for a two-year term will take place at the Duncan White Auditorium from 10 am onwards today (Feb 21).

Accordingly, candidates would compete for one slot of the posts of President, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Additional Secretary and two slots of Vice President.

Candidates vying for the presidency include Shammi Silva who would represent the faction of former SLC Chairman Thilanga Sumathipala, while Jayantha Dharmadasa and K. Mathivathan would represent one-time world cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga.

Meanwhile, Mohan de Silva is to contest for the post of Secretary while Ravin Wickramaratne would contest for the post of Vice President following a consensus that was arrived by the Sports Minister who initially refused to accept their nominations. A concensus was reached at the Appeal Court yesterday and further hearings will take place in March.

A total of 147 members representing district, and provincial level sports clubs would cast their votes at today's election which would be monitored by more than 10 state officials including members of the Elections Commission. 

Police officers attached to the Kaduruwana Police would constitute over 100 personnel who would be deployed for security purposes during the polls.

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Arjuna Ranatunga who would be contesting for the post of Vice President would cast his vote representing the Meegamuwa Sports Club.

MP Thilanga Sumathipala would represent the Western Province Sports Club while MP Vijith Wijayamuni de Soyza would cast his vote on behalf of the Monaragala District club.
