The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP)’s politburo has decided to cancel the membership of its members who supported other candidates during the Presidential election.
This decision had been made during yesterday’s politburo meeting convened under its leader Maithripala Sirisena, politburo member Professor Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa said.
During yesterday’s meeting, the reigns of the party’s chairmanship was handed over to Sirisena by Prof Piyadasa who had served as Acting SLFP Chairman until the end of the election.
The SLFP supported Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa during the election which saw SLFP leader Sirisena taking a neutral stance.
Among those who would be subjected to disciplinary action are SLFP Patron Chandrika Kumaratunga, and parliamentarians Vijith Vijithamuni Soysa and A.H.M. Fowzi who supported ruling party candidate Sajith Premadasa.
Such measures will also be taken against parliamentarians S.B. Dissanayake and Dilan Perera who obtained membership of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) without lawfully resigning from the party, Prof. Piyadasa said.
Action will also be taken against provincial council and pradeshiya sabha members who supported other candidates during the election, he added.
