The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has informed the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) that it would not form an alliance if the SLPP decides to contest under the flower bud symbol at the presidential poll.
SLFP leader President Maithripala Sirisena had conveyed his party’s decision in writing to SLPP national organiser Basil Rajapaksa today (Oct 3).
Meanwhile, SLPP Presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is expected to meet with the three SLFP members tonight.
SLFP Spokesman Weerakumara Dissanayake said that SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara, Mahinda Amaraweera and Lasantha Alagiyawanna will take part in this discussion.
The SLFP has been urging the SLPP to form a common symbol if both parties are to contest jointly at the upcoming presidential election. However, the request has failed to elicit a positive response so far.
