SLPP denies any involvement in plotting of alleged attack as indicated on social media

News

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has denied any involvement in an alleged attack next week after concerns were raised on social media to that effect.

State Minister Eran Wickramaratne, yesterday (Nov 6), called on the Election Commission (EC) to investigate the tweet, citing that it could impact the November 16 presidential election.

The tweet, as mentioned by the state minister in his letter to the EC, alleged that the SLPP was involved in the plotting of a “bomb attack", and therefore urged to convene a National Security Council meeting.

However, the SLPP, in a letter to the EC, said it has become suspicious as to whether there is a conspiracy to prevent its candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s victory at the upcoming election.

Rajapaksa’s Spokesman Dullas Alahapperuma, in the letter, blamed individuals like state minister Wickramaratne, for attempting to create tensions during the country’s ongoing “decisive phase”.

He claimed that the ruling United National Party, has resorted to such means to clinch victory at previous elections as well.

Accordingly, the SLPP called on the EC, together with the country’s security units to ensure that such a situation is defeated. “We reiterate our pledge to provide maximum support to the EC, to conduct a peaceful election,” the SLPP stressed in the statement.
